Into the City
Both Mr B and I had a day off work today so decided, let's head into Oxford for the morning! We live around half an hour away from Oxford, it's our closest city but we haven't spent much time there since moving to the area. Today was a great chance to check it all out whilst the good weather sticks around!
In case you weren't aware, Oxford is home to the famous Oxford University. Oxford Uni is one of the best universities in the world and certainly one of the most beautiful and historic. Many famous people have passed through it's spectacularly old doors such as Albert Einstein, David Cameron, Tina Brown and J.R.R Tolkien to name but a few. Whilst slowly roaming the cobbled streets, we piggy backed on the many historical walking tours to find out little snippets about the city. There was a lot of talk about the infamous "Bullingdon Club". I recommend you give this a Google so you can understand the sheer stupidity that's involved when trying to become a member!
Aside from the history of Oxford University, it has also been host to an extremely famous film crew Harry Potter merchandise - mad!
whilst they filmed many of the scenes within the universities walls. The arch below was featured in Harry Potter along with many other spots across Oxford. They do specific Harry Potter tours for anyone that's interested! There are even shops in Oxford dedicated to Harry Potter!
Not long into our slow browse through the streets, my stomach started rumbling! Food was calling so we ditched the chain restaurants that line the many streets and instead, headed to the Covered Market. The market is so charming! The classic smell that comes from a market wafting into our faces when entering, I actually love it! Tiny shops littered the alleys. Incense shops, leather boutiques, the most beautiful (and cheap) florists and many food outlets. We stumbled across Sasi's Thai pretty quickly as the queue was billowing out into the alley. This is always a good sign so we immediately joined the back! Super cheap and utterly authentic tasting Thai food. Well worth a visit when in Oxford!
After food, we strolled over to the many museums that inhabit Oxford. We spent a few hours just milling about, reading everything and taking in all the history. It's worth a visit if you have a few hours to spare. Of course, between all this walking, we stopped a pub or two. Just to refresh ourselves on this very hot and humid day! CHEERS! Day off well spent! Now it's home to stock up on the wine and cook up some home-made pizzas!
